Generous George

Having donated thousands of pounds to good causes, George Michael’s generosity that was revealed after his death, touched the world. Who is now going to benefit from his millions in his will?

As grieving fans lay flowers at his home, mystery still shrouds the reason behind George Michael’s tragic death, aged just 53, on Christmas Day. Thames Valley Police are now investigating how he spent his final days.

However he died, it’s clear that George Michael lived a life of decency and kindness, helping others at every turn. Since his passing, countless stories of his philanthropy, much of which he undertook anonymously, have emerged. He donated millions of pounds to charities including Childline, Terrence Higgins Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, as well as holding free concerts for NHS nurses. He volunteered in homeless shelters and also responded to individual stories that moved him.

“I can’t ever thank him enough for what he has done for me and my husband,” said Jo Maidment, who the star donated £15,000 towards IVF to after hearing her talk about her struggle to conceive on ITV’s This Morning in 2010. Thanks to George, Jo now has a daughter called Betsy. He also donated £9,000 to a woman he saw discussing her struggle to conceive on Channel 4’s Deal or No Deal, tipped a waitress £5,000 after learning she was a student nurse encumbered by heavy debts, and paid for a boy with Down’s Syndrome and his family to visit Lapland after seeing them on This Morning.

As for his will, it seems likely that with no children of his own, his godchildren will receive a large portion of his estimated £105 million fortune. His godchildren include Martin Kemp and Shirlie Holliman’s children, Roman and Harley, and his cousin Andros’ two children. Geri Halliwell’s daughter Bluebell, whose godfather is George’s ex-partner Kenny Goss, is also expected to inherit, along with his boyfriend Fadi Fawaz and his sisters Melanie and Yioda.

Of course, all his fans will inherit too – he leaves a legacy of music for them and for generations of music lovers to come.
