Who looks after my children if I die?

After the initial cuddle and the tears of joy and the barrage of phone calls and Facebook messages, what is the next priority for a new parent?

As any mum or dad will tell you, life becomes hectic when a baby is born. However, one of the most important things on your to-do list should be updating your wills.

Not many people are comfortable talking about death. And it’s probably one of the most chilling aspects for parents to discuss and plan for. But what happens if they both die before their children are old enough to look after themselves?

The cold, hard fact is that if you do not nominate a guardian in your will, social services will decide who looks after your kids until they are 18. And it’s not guaranteed that they will choose a member of your family or friend. Your children may be brought up by total strangers.
