What happens to my pets?

We’ve previously explained that you can’t leave money in your will to your cat or dog as pets are classed as personal possessions.

But what you can do is leave money to a friend or family member so they can care for them. If you are bequeathing your pets to a named person in your will, please make sure you have spoken to them and checked they are willing to take your animals in.

Our two and four-legged friends tend to have shorter lives than us humans. So don’t actually name them in your will as you may forget to update it if one dies and you acquire a new one. Just refer to all of your pets.

If you have no-one prepared to love and care for your pets, various charities can help. The RSPCA, for example, offers a Home for Life service. You need to apply in advance, which can be done on their website, www.rspca.org.uk. This scheme is free. But please consider making a bequest in your will to help the RSPCA continue its great work.
