What Happens to a Dead Person’s Car?

Something that may catch many people out is the need to re-tax a car that you inherit when, say, a parent has died.

Most of us know that we would need insurance. But some may not be aware that the DVLA changed its rules when vehicle tax discs were abolished in 2014. Tax used to belong to the car. Now it belongs to the owner.

The value of the car on the day its owner died should be entered on the probate forms as an asset. Any outstanding loan should be noted as a debt against the estate. An executor of the will is allowed to sell the vehicle before applying for probate.

If the car has little value, there are schemes available to scrap it and donate the proceeds to charity. Two recommended websites that you may consider are www.charitycar.co.uk and www.giveacar.co.uk.

When a car owner dies, you should notify the DVLA in Swansea via the Tell Us Once service, if it's available in your area. If not, write to them separately but you won't need to enclose a death certificate.
